I've been keeping orchids since 1998 after acquiring a few specimens. I was warned by fellow hobbyists that orchids are addictive; just see my collection now! Can't forget my other plant addictions so check out the brugmansia and succulents too!

The latest and best bloom cycle happened June 2021. So far, this phalaenopsis only blooms once a year in the springtime and each bloom last about a month. However, with so many spikes and blooms, the whole plant can be in bloom for several months at a time.<br /></p><p>My good friend and fellow orchidist, Drew Goddard of <a href="https://this-side-of-paradise.square.site/" target="_blank">This Side of Paradise Orchids </a>hybridized and registered (2018) this incredible phalaenopsis and I am so lucky to have this specimen in my collection. The parents are Phalaenopsis inscriptiosinensis × Phalaenopsis modesta. <br /></p><p> <br /></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmDcahrk_2DrnE1jBhFTQuKfbekzeij7sBsfeaAc44Dx4KQmC6KS_SAseCkKPQtu8ch7BNyak6aVIo0e5DQnyZ31t-OVZybcOi3AvDSdoayhpYjBuejPoQZupsKpeBAJgTM7pHfoVX0qkE/s788/207352195_10159715368264853_4528125200048445817_n.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="788" data-original-width="600" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmDcahrk_2DrnE1jBhFTQuKfbekzeij7sBsfeaAc44Dx4KQmC6KS_SAseCkKPQtu8ch7BNyak6aVIo0e5DQnyZ31t-OVZybcOi3AvDSdoayhpYjBuejPoQZupsKpeBAJgTM7pHfoVX0qkE/w305-h400/207352195_10159715368264853_4528125200048445817_n.jpg" width="305" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Phal Lirpa (June 2021)<br /></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPLFddP-HauSdB90kR2hYUdsU1WnOGG9GxxFyqbIzzzpD0BD11troIhFatmmhgtmS9-luriXqAZ538qnktk5lyrJ0R9iN_BPT3EoCAnLEJjvXlVlUbS7VrQeRXFxdeHdESqsjxMlIJgo5B/s960/208348495_10159715371899853_8802870123847304579_n.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="698" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPLFddP-HauSdB90kR2hYUdsU1WnOGG9GxxFyqbIzzzpD0BD11troIhFatmmhgtmS9-luriXqAZ538qnktk5lyrJ0R9iN_BPT3EoCAnLEJjvXlVlUbS7VrQeRXFxdeHdESqsjxMlIJgo5B/w291-h400/208348495_10159715371899853_8802870123847304579_n.jpg" width="291" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Phal Lirpa (May 2020)<br /></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><p><br /></p>Colette Theriaulthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12999867790814954546noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7101309658690285254.post-16662963707382336092021-06-30T17:34:00.005-07:002021-06-30T17:34:46.357-07:00Southern Ontario Orchid Society May 2021 Virtual Orchid Table (judging) <p></p><p> I almost forgot to post May's entries to the SOOS virtual orchid judging table! This means they cannot get their nutrients from photosynthesis. Secondly, these orchids are actually parasitic organisms! They are described as being myco-heterotrophic and obtain nutrients from mycorhyzal fungi.</p><p>This strange and beautiful plant is considered a common native orchid in Canada but are quite rare and vulnerable in their northern range. Needless to say, finding them so far north was an interesting and exciting discovery!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidovDwwcMjrKQevWceHvG_yF8buLvryfcjcFXSHBUGhrGSTm7tVeL87sKEjWLgwixDQX7ugWiEYGX3qdfb2QlKhtM_ztl2aSi_WiZHsjpfpSUG61cjVQEV9yZzAzHysZQInVEyWd_7uGuy/s1456/stripedcoralrootjune2019.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1456" data-original-width="1272" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidovDwwcMjrKQevWceHvG_yF8buLvryfcjcFXSHBUGhrGSTm7tVeL87sKEjWLgwixDQX7ugWiEYGX3qdfb2QlKhtM_ztl2aSi_WiZHsjpfpSUG61cjVQEV9yZzAzHysZQInVEyWd_7uGuy/s320/stripedcoralrootjune2019.jpg" /></a></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvtlmH6pbeveMjhcnFrRKexDLZlKv1muREkLWsGinFcnxdTVVgemjtjdCZoXj2GMaVXMdWxkF2NLDOs8lXuyyYPAaRsFi2I5GNP6oZ44OudXAjqeGxyimW6KfA6VUyEjMZudd-SIHURDYl/s1333/stripedcoralroot3june2019.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1333" data-original-width="1000" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvtlmH6pbeveMjhcnFrRKexDLZlKv1muREkLWsGinFcnxdTVVgemjtjdCZoXj2GMaVXMdWxkF2NLDOs8lXuyyYPAaRsFi2I5GNP6oZ44OudXAjqeGxyimW6KfA6VUyEjMZudd-SIHURDYl/s320/stripedcoralroot3june2019.jpg" /></a></div><br /><br /><p><br /></p>Colette Theriaulthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12999867790814954546noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7101309658690285254.post-79249789202098604252021-02-08T08:51:00.001-08:002021-02-08T08:51:53.920-08:00Dendrobium trinervium miniature orchid<p><span class="d2edcug0 hpfvmrgz qv66sw1b c1et5uql rrkovp55 a8c37x1j keod5gw0 nxhoafnm aigsh9s9 d3f4x2em fe6kdd0r mau55g9w c8b282yb iv3no6db jq4qci2q a3bd9o3v knj5qynh oo9gr5id" dir="auto">Happiness

What looked like a creepy Grinch hand has blossomed into something spectacular and almost eerie!</p><p>Bulbophyllum orchids often have an unpleasant scent and this one reminds me of mushrooms that have gone bad and slimy. Thank goodness one can only detect the scent up close! </p><p>The lip is delicately balanced on a hinge-type structure and jiggles with the slightest breeze. Apparently, this is an adaptation to attract flies who then pollinate the blooms. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjga294v9BgkmUSLQ5L22VrfbkKM4qY0IKHf6CrdgI0rFhZL9j470vNUag68Jz-rTgERZ9HoCE9y8tUdg4Xzdc662F3XKUjqk0zM0fxQA_USPxEcazRHHJFGHsDfs4jBUOv5leyZm4sRwif/s960/119664909_10158946909269853_1691721114084092290_n.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="846" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjga294v9BgkmUSLQ5L22VrfbkKM4qY0IKHf6CrdgI0rFhZL9j470vNUag68Jz-rTgERZ9HoCE9y8tUdg4Xzdc662F3XKUjqk0zM0fxQA_USPxEcazRHHJFGHsDfs4jBUOv5leyZm4sRwif/w353-h400/119664909_10158946909269853_1691721114084092290_n.jpg" width="353" /></a></div></div><br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXVvlu8XOwOFGnncDtMAGtCUBAPz3_lYouD3giPrsaBU1tctzJ0vBqghP5YG7FAOeoIrEwRV1OAjzJ1xgtzNTvyzo32t1lW2I48d0xoDe5AsgyjMoENL1poPzBL4oqhz8fmvwccOOFZAIU/s960/119200504_10158946909384853_2382613224383838931_n.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="720" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXVvlu8XOwOFGnncDtMAGtCUBAPz3_lYouD3giPrsaBU1tctzJ0vBqghP5YG7FAOeoIrEwRV1OAjzJ1xgtzNTvyzo32t1lW2I48d0xoDe5AsgyjMoENL1poPzBL4oqhz8fmvwccOOFZAIU/w300-h400/119200504_10158946909384853_2382613224383838931_n.jpg" width="300" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUmSjVgWmM9K81pciR5S6niUVPFYx4W9H-k0A_PGiYPjUwEgYM2QZ_c6kP5CEjLv9khHu_emrRFMj60XVbyg8vh0fDthKju7gGIzZMlEASJPU6bfTf5qmrGjIDocIYck6QFFuPxrn3l4dY/s960/120126346_10158975551109853_6429031931476409056_n.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="720" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUmSjVgWmM9K81pciR5S6niUVPFYx4W9H-k0A_PGiYPjUwEgYM2QZ_c6kP5CEjLv9khHu_emrRFMj60XVbyg8vh0fDthKju7gGIzZMlEASJPU6bfTf5qmrGjIDocIYck6QFFuPxrn3l4dY/w300-h400/120126346_10158975551109853_6429031931476409056_n.jpg" width="300" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7Ut0UuoTLYlpjUmVAOZ90sn7ZUCzjJaqI5A2FFkJC9Qg8Nm32IN1C3hz6-J2UBJP920ZashvSLOBWinVcebHmUCZiqgao0ptFInzyqv5apipDIhrU9Yv5GyoC0O4HDjAGKJYgOg2syaMN/s960/120305628_10158975551004853_349471479323935379_n.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="772" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7Ut0UuoTLYlpjUmVAOZ90sn7ZUCzjJaqI5A2FFkJC9Qg8Nm32IN1C3hz6-J2UBJP920ZashvSLOBWinVcebHmUCZiqgao0ptFInzyqv5apipDIhrU9Yv5GyoC0O4HDjAGKJYgOg2syaMN/w321-h400/120305628_10158975551004853_349471479323935379_n.jpg" width="321" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Colette Theriaulthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12999867790814954546noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7101309658690285254.post-84997327571352512652020-04-21T17:17:00.002-07:002020-04-21T17:22:04.414-07:00Hello my pretty little Psychopsis!Well, this new bloom turned out exactly like the first one so it most likely will always have a thin lip and petals. I fell in love with the look of this crazy antenna-alien-insect the second I saw it. Some say it looks like a star-fish but I am sure it will continue to amuse onlookers regardless of what creepy creature they might think it looks like. <br />

Ideally, I should have cut the bloom spike long ago for the plant to conserve energy and grow stronger. However, I also have a very good offshoot that is growing nicely so I decided to let the main plant bloom. And SURPRISE! this was labeled as Cattlianthe "Barefoot Mailman" but alas, it is Rth Shinfong Little Sun 'Young-Min Golden Boy’ (the label I found in another pot.<br />
<br />
I have to say this Cattleya hybrid is a real fighter, and I'm quite confident it will bounce back and reward me with many more blooms given the proper care. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I had been anticipating the opening of these blooms ever since I confirmed flower buds were developing inside the sheath several months ago. The tag on this specimen indicated it was Cattleya intermedia var Orlata "Marble" x self but, once the flower began to open something clearly was amiss!<br />
With the consultation of a few of my orchid friends, it was clear that the label had to be wrong since this plant looked nothing like Cattleya intermedia. For one thing, Cattleya intermedia is bifoliate and has thin long pseudobulbs while my plant had fat pseudobulbs and was unifoliate! Furthermore, Cattleya intermedia flowers are on the smaller side but mine measured almost 6" across! It bore a striking resemblance to my Cattleya mossiae x mossiea semi alba which bloomed earlier this year.<br />
<br />
So, even though my specimen <i>look</i>s like Cattleya mossiae, it will forever be a NOID. Nonetheless, it is still very pretty and fragrant so worthy of being part of my collection in my eyes!<br />

The plant was acquired through John Barnes in July of 2017 and produced its first blooms in January of 2019. It is one of many wonderful cross from DiCiommo Orchids.<br />
<br />
This blooming season (2nd) the flowers are a bit different; the lateral sepals are wider, less ruffled and the flares are not as prominent, giving the bloom a more uniformly colored appearance. The color is best described as vibrant burnt orange and the petal surface is diamond dusted which gives it a shimmering effect when seen in bright light. The lip is solid deep cherry/magenta color and the blooms produce no significant fragrance.<br />
<br />
It is possible that the difference in bloom appearance from a year ago can be attributed to growing the plant under artificial light (Jan 2019) vs natural window light ( Dec 2019).<br />

After two years of growing this John Barnes seedling out, it finally surprised me yesterday with these giant eloquent blooms! Now I have to wait a few days to see if there is any fragrance to them.<br />
<br />
I immediately crossed one of the blossoms with Potinara Sweet Chief Orange but those blooms were spent so the pollen may not be viable anymore. Only time will tell!<br />
Meet Cattleya mossiae x Cattleya mossiae semi alba <br />
